OUR CONTRACT
Generally speaking, publishing contracts exist to protect the publishing house and to arrange for the licensing of publication rights of an author's intellectual property. They spell out precisely what is expected of each party and how the proceeds of each person's investment will be divided.
Our contract does the same thing, but we're often asked why we must have a signed contract if we don't "acquire" the book rights. The answer is fairly simple: we don't. We could just as easily charge for our services and hand out ISBNs for those who qualify and leave it at that. The most important reason we have a contract policy is to protect you... not us.
The contract specifically limits what your invest covers, and what it doesn't. It specifies all of the rights associated with publishing your book, including movie rights, commercial rights, and marketing rights. Everything is covered, and for most of our contracts everything stays with the author, 100%. If the author chooses a traditional investment package, we will acquire rights with a limitation on when that acquisition expires (upon full author investment.)
Our contract does protect us to a certain degree as well. We specify that you are under an obligation to complete your project. If you don't, we get to take back our ISBN and we don't have to return investment dollars made up to that point. We specify that the final book must not be altered in any way. The author can't make it through the vetting process and then rewrite the book later, because that work reflects back on all of the works written by all of our authors. We have high standards and we don't want our name or imprint associated with less-than-stellar works.
Overall, the contract is direct and protects you from wondering what the "catch" is. There is no catch, and we've published our basic contract on this website for the world to see. Each contract starts at this point and then is tailored to meet the requirements for each project.
Even better? We are open to negotiation and changes to the contract if that makes you feel more comfortable. But with a contract that assigns 100% of proceeds and revenue from your project to you, we can't think of anything you might want to change.
So, take a few moments, if you like, and review our contract. There are two options for review. The first is the written basic contract, as it stands. The second option includes the exact wording of the contract, with our intentions and interpretations noted for each section and/or clause.
